Public Health Planning For Hearing Impairment 5th Edition: WizEar & London School Of Hygiene

If this is you then this Public Health Training is for you. WizEar has been running this course for over five years now and to date 180 people have been trained and certified in this course. You too can be part of this growing circle by enrolling into this course which will run for five days from 12th-16th July, 2021. (Venue to be confirmed)
The short course runs from the 12th-16th July in Harare.
The programme is run by WizEar whose aim is to create a society free from avoidable hearing impairment and also enable the impaired to attain the highest quality of life possible.
In effort to achieve this, WizEar will be partnering and hosting the London School Of Hygiene for the 5th Edition of the Public Health Planning for Hearing Impairment course that addresses the hearing loss challenges.
What is The London School of Hygiene And Tropical Medicine (LSHTM)?
LSHTM is a world-leading center for research and postgraduate education in public health with over 4000 students in 100 countries and is based in the UK. It works in conjunction with The Disability Group (DEAPH), which is based at the school. The Disability Group forms part of the Clinical Research Department in the faculty of Infectious and Tropical Diseases.
Aims and services provided by WizEar
Conducting of hearing aid services for underprivileged children and adults from remote areas. So far it has provided over 1000 hearing aids and accessories to the Zimbabwean society and all this was done in an effort to improve rehabilitation of the hearing impaired.
Key facts
- According to WHO 466 million people globally have disabling hearing loss and this number can double by 2030.
- Major causes of hearing in low and middle countries are middle ear infections, excessive noise, inappropriate use of drugs, problems during childbirth and so forth.
- At least half of all hearing impairment is preventable
- Properly fitted hearing aids can improve communication in at least 90% of people with hearing impairment.
- In developing countries, fewer than 1 in 40 people who need hearing aid have one.
Aims of the course
To enable participants to understand the magnitude and causes of hearing impairment and the challenges of providing leading health in developing countries. The course will familiarize participants with public health approaches to ear and hearing health and develop programs for prevention and management at local, district or national level.
Key learning objectives
- Train health professionals and health planners to use public health methods to address hearing loss challenges.
- Understand how the principles and practice of public health apply to hearing loss.
- Review epidemiology of ear disease and hearing loss globally and in developing countries
- Use a public health approach to explore challenges and solutions in the prevention and rehabilitation of hearing loss in developing countries.
- Assess the role of Primary Ear and Hearing Care and training
- Discuss how to raise awareness and mobilize resources for ear and hearing health in developing countries.
- Learn how to develop a programme for ear and hearing health in participant’s own countries or region.
Target Audience
- E.N.T surgeons, otologists, audiologists, paediatricians, or allied health professionals, health planners or NGO workers
- Interested people who are starting, or continuing, or resuming a career in ear and hearing health in the developing world
- People who wish to learn about the planning principles involved in establishing public health programmes for ear and hearing health in the developing world
- People who are interested in working together with health workers from developing countries
Teaching
Lecturers and experts in the field of hearing and public health who are from or have lived in developing countries will teach the course. Teaching will be conducted through a mixture of interactive lectures, case studies, discussions and group exercises. A USB flash drive with the course material will be provided.
Accreditation and Methods of Assessment
There is no formal assessment but a certificate of completion will be issued.
